It's nearly all being torn down now.
The six-month 2010 Shanghai Expo world's fair that ended Oct. 31 smashed the record for the most attendance for an event in human history with 74 million.
But only the magnificent China Pavilion, a performing arts center and some conference buildings will remain.
Among the buildings being demolished is the U.S. Pavilion, the steel-gray building shaped like an eagle. The waterfall, the large video theaters, the exhibit areas, the upstairs VIP lounge and dining hall and the gift shop all are being taken apart, along with nearly every other of the 200 country, city and industry pavilions.
Shanghai, a city of about 22 million people, needs the valuable land for commercial and residential development.
San Antonio companies helped pay for the U.S. Pavilion, donating a total of more than $500,000 toward the nearly $70 million that was raised by the private sector nationwide. A San Antonian headed the pavilion. José Villarreal was U.S. ambassador commissioner general during the fair, making him a popular figure throughout China.
Villarreal believes the money and effort was worth it. The U.S. Pavilion was visited by 7.5 million people, nearly all of them Chinese. That's more than 40,000 people a day.
Because of its contribution, San Antonio was highlighted for two weeks in May on the video boards and during three San Antonio Days the week Mayor Julián Castro led a city delegation on a trade-and-investment mission.
“San Antonio made important contacts,” Villarreal said of the May trip, “including government leaders. We put San Antonio on the map in China, and China is appreciative of all the sponsors for the U.S. Pavilion. What happens from here depends on San Antonio's follow-through with the relationships that were established.”
The follow-through will materialize next year in the form of a new China plan for San Antonio. City Council member Elisa Chan, a native of Taiwan who helped lead the city group to the Shanghai Expo in May, has organized an ad hoc committee of a dozen people who were among the 70 people in the delegation.
That committee has held one meeting and will have others before producing a long-range plan for seeking trade and investment with Chinese companies, working with the Free Trade Alliance San Antonio, said Beth Costello of the city International and Economic Development Department.
“Our participation was a first step,” Villarreal said. “It was an opportunity for the city to plant its flag and prove that the city was committed” to trade and commerce.
The Shanghai Expo became a giant in the history of world's fairs. It helped anchor Asia as the future of economic and technological advancement. World fairs still create influence. Other nations are planning fairs, including South Korea in 2012.
The year 2020 will have competition for official designation for a world's fair, Villarreal said. At least two U.S. areas will seek the designation from Paris' Bureau of International Exhibitions — California's Silicon Valley and Houston.
The United States never should have lost interest in world's fairs after the last one in 1984. It's time for a U.S. fair.
